Rahul Gandhi files nomination for Congress president post

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Monday filed his nomination for the party president’s post.

A host of senior members of the organisation , including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, were present at the event at the party headquarters in Delhi.

Mr. Gandhi will take over the post from his mother Sonia Gandhi, the longest serving Congress chief. She has helmed the party since 1998.

Ms. Sonia Gandhi and Dr. Singh were among the proposers of the candidature of Mr. Gandh.

The process of filing of nominations started on Friday. The last date for filing nominations is December 4, the last date for withdrawal of candidature December 11, and the election, if necessary, will be held on December 16. The counting of votes will take place on December 19.
