NSUI gets top post in MSU students’ polls
The National Students Union of India (NSUI) came out on top in students’ elections at MS University at Vadodaraafter a one-year gap. Defeating Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), NSUI candidate won the top post of University General Secretary at the MS University. NSUI’s Vraj Patel won the UGS election with a margin of 650 votes according to results announced on Friday. He bagged 6,727 votes defeating local union Vidyarthi Vikas Parishad’s Harshal Chaudhary. ABVP candidate Rahul Zinzala managed 1,222 votes. More people voted for NOTA than the ABVP in elections for both posts- UGS and VP showing disenchantment of students towards the BJP’s student wing.
In fact, none of the top two posts, the UGS and Vice President went to ABVP, who had won both the elections in 2017. Such was the resentment that ABVP won fewer votes than None Of The Above (NOTA). As many as 1,307 students pressed the NOTA button. The two student organisations were fighting for 40,000 votes in 14 faculties and four colleges affiliated to the varsity. The slide was obvious for the Vice Presidents post where ABVP candidate Anisha Mishra got 1,285 votes while 1,303 opted for NOTA. The VP’s post, reserved for woman candidate, was won by Saloni Mishra of the local student union Jai Ho. The student union is formed by former NSUI member Priyanka Patel who had won the UGS election in 2015. She parted ways with NSUI later and started her own group. NSUI’s Zeel Brahmbhatt was defeated by Saloni Mishra. He bagged 6,191 votes against Saloni Mishra’s 6,856.
