AMC does not ‘plastic’ what it preaches

Outside the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) office, hundreds of plastic cup and bag manufacturing premises were being raided and sealed, fines worth lakhs were being imposed.

But on Tuesday, it turned out to be an embarrassing moment for Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation officials and mayor Meenakshi Patel, when the opposition Congress pointed out that the attendants in the general board were serving water in disposable plastic glass. “What fines would AMC impose on itself now? Do you know how many microns is the thickness of these disposable glass?” opposition leader Badruddin Sheikh asked the board.

Other issues that were raised during the board included toxic industrial effluent being illegally pumped into the drainage stream.
