Demonetisation was a fraud on the nation: Rahul Gandhi

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi deliberately “inflicted the wound of demonetisation on the country to help his 15-20 crony capitalist friends” and described it as a “scam.”

He was addressing a press conference at the party headquarters. Asked whether Mr. Modi should apologise for the November 2016 note ban, he said, “An apology is sought for a mistake, but the note ban was a deliberate attack on India’s medium and small businesses.”

Mr. Gandhi also alleged that the Prime Minister was “lying” about the Rafale deal and reiterated his demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe to find out “what is the deal struck between Mr. Modi and industrialist Anil Ambani.”

He said the note ban was meant “to help the richest people, the most corrupt people on this land to change their money from black to white.”

He was reacting to the latest annual report of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) that claimed 99.3% of the banned ₹500 and ₹1000 notes have returned to the banking system.
