Aim to win one seat more than BJP in Gujarat: Congress
Seeking to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his home state of Gujarat, the Congress has set a target to win at least one seat more than the BJP in the state that voted overwhelmingly in favour of the ‘son-of-the-soil’.
Upbeat after giving a tough fight to the BJP in last year’s assembly elections, the Congress is busy strengthening its grass-roots network to give the party a much-needed boost in the Lok Sabha elections.
“We aim to win one seat more than the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections,” Rajeev Satav, AICC in-charge of Gujarat told DH.
Gujarat has 26 Lok Sabha seats and the BJP had managed to win them all, by appealing to the voters to make the ‘son of the soil’, Modi the prime minister in 2014. In doing so, the BJP snatched 11 seats from the Congress to make it a clean sweep.
The Congress had won 11 seats in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections in Gujarat with a 41% vote share, while the BJP had won 15 seats.
Satav said the Congress was strengthening its organizational structure from booth-level upwards to capitalize on the gains made during the assembly elections. In the state polls, the Congress won 71 assembly seats — 16 more than it had managed in 20…
