Gujarat Congress raises red flag over two controversial state bills

Gujarat Congress leaders have alleged that with this amendment, the concept behind the provisions of the original act that was to acquire the land by the government from the persons who have surplus land than certain limit and to allot such land to the needy people like cattle breeders, land less people, farm labourers and farmers having marginal holding have changed.

Twenty-eight MLAs and seven former MPs and other leaders of Congress from Gujarat have approached the President of India requesting him not to given assent and return as unsanctioned to the state government the two controversial bills – Gujarat Agricultural Land Ceiling (Amendment) Bill, 2015 (GALC) and Gujarat Control of Terrorism and Organised Crime Bill, 2015 (GCTOC).

Terming the GALC (amendment) bill, passed by the Gujarat assembly on August 28, is against the interests of the people, particularly landless farmers and farm labourers, Gujarat Congress leader Bharatsinh Solanki said, “the state government is eyeing this land with corrupt and greedy intention as after the words “for ensuring the full and efficient use thereof” the words “or for the allotment of industrial purpose or for the development thereof or for any public purpose” has been inserted in its preamble.
