Congress demands President rule in Gujarat
Criticizing the ordinance issued by the state government for giving it the power to delay local body elections, the Gujarat Congress on Sunday demanded President’s rule in the state. The Congress said the state government had itself cited poor law and order situation as the reason for delaying civic body polls by three months.
Gujarat Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki said that by issuing the ordinance, the state government had given the state election commission the power to review the law and order situation and delay elections. “The same commission has reviewed the law and order situation in the state and announced postponement of elections by three months till further review. This indicates that the state government is delaying the local body elections because it is afraid of an electoral debacle,” said Solanki.
The GPCC president further said that the Congress had demanded in the assembly a discussion on the poor law and order situation in the state. “But it was not allowed during the monsoon session in August. The government could have brought a bill in the assembly but it had mala fide intentions,” alleged Solanki./
