Suspension of 25 MPs: Congress holds demonstrations over ‘gagging of democracy’
State Congress held demonstrations and burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at several district headquarters, including Ahmedabad, to observe August 4 as a “black day in Indian democracy’’ to protest the suspension of 25 Congress MPs during the current session of Parliament. Several Congress workers were also detained by police in Gandhingar when they were returning after submitting memorandum to Gandhinagar district collector. Party General Secretary Nishith Vyas said the detention was unprovoked as the workers had held the demonstration after seeking police permission. The party leaders described the suspension of MPs as “gagging of democracy’’ under Modi. They said that the Congress MPs were only demanding resignations of External Affairs MInister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje for their alleged involvement in ‘Laligate’.
