Vadodara: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday targeted the BJP and the RSS over the use of the term ‘Vanvasis’ for tribals and claimed they have coined the word to deny them original ownership of water, forest and land, which have belonged to them for centuries.

Addressing the ‘Adivasi Adhikar Samvidhan Sammelan’ in Vadodara, Gandhi reiterated his demand for a caste census, which he said is vital for tribals to get their share in power and wealth of the country.

“Adivasi refers to the original owners of India. Had you visited this land 1,000, 2,000, or even 5,000 years ago, you would have found that every single inch of land was in the hands of Adivasis,” the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha told the gathering.

“Now, in the 21st century, a new term has emerged, a term coined by the RSS and the BJP, ‘Vanvasi’ (forest dweller). The term ‘Vanvasi’ implies that you were not the original owners of this land. The term ‘Adivasi’, on the other hand, signifies that this country belonged to you, that its water, forests and land were rightfully yours,” he insisted.

To call Adivasis Vanvasis is an attack on the Constitution and revered tribal leader Birsa Munda, Gandhi maintained.

“The use of the term ‘Vanvasi’ suggests you were not the original owners, that the original owners were someone else and that water, forests and land did not belong to you; rather, you merely happen to reside within forests,” the Congress MP stated.

Gandhi said that in the India-US interim trade deal, for the first time, the country’s farm sector has been opened by the government to American products, something no Prime Minister had done in the past.

THE Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) on Friday announced a statewide ‘Jan Akrosh Yatra’ from February 2 to voice issues of farmers, students, youth, women, small traders and marginalised communities.

The Jan Akrosh Yatra – to be launched from Kaprada in South Gujarat – will cover seven districts, 40 talukas and 12 cities in its secound phase. The secound phase will cover 1,073 km before concluding at Narmada district.

Gujarat Congress alleges large-scale ‘vote theft’ in state

Gujarat Congress on Saturday alleged “vote theft” in an assembly constituency, claiming that suspicious, fraudulent and duplicate voters had contributed to the BJP’s victory in elections in the state.

Talking to reporters, state Congress president Amit Chavda said that the party had started scrutiny of the voter list of the Choryasi assembly seat that falls under the Navsari Lok Sabha seat represented by Gujarat BJP president and Union Cabinet Minister CR Paatil and found large-scale “vote theft”.

Chavda said the party zeroed in on the Choryasi seat, as it came under Paatil’s Lok Sabha constituency, from where he has won by record margins.

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat Congress has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of widespread voter list manipulation in Navsari, the constituency of state BJP president and Union Minister C.R. Patil.

He linked these irregularities to the BJP’s “record-breaking victories,” calling it “nothing less than vote theft” and vowed to launch a statewide campaign to “save democracy.”

Addressing a press conference on Saturday, Chavda stated, “We checked Navsari’s electoral rolls and found 30,000 fake voters. If this happens in one seat, what could be happening across Gujarat?” He further tied his claim to Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent Lok Sabha presentation, which had highlighted irregularities in electoral rolls nationwide.

Gujarat Congress chief Amit Chavda alleged large-scale voter roll manipulation in Gujarat’s Navsari, claiming 30,000 fake or duplicate entries, and demanded a full verification of the electoral rolls.

The Gujarat unit of the Congress party on Saturday accused the ruling BJP of orchestrating a large-scale “vote chori” (vote theft) in the state, alleging that thousands of fake and duplicate entries have been found in the electoral rolls.

State Congress president Amit Chavda said the party’s scrutiny of voter lists has revealed that “one person, multiple votes” is becoming a recurring pattern in Gujarat. He claimed the alleged manipulation was most evident in the Navsari Lok Sabha constituency, represented by Gujarat BJP chief and Union Cabinet minister CR Patil.

According to Chavda, a detailed examination of the Choriyasi Assembly segment in Navsari showed serious discrepancies. Out of 6,09,592 registered voters, Congress said it checked about 40 per cent of the entries and found nearly 30,000 to be “duplicate, fake or suspicious”.

“If one constituency shows such a scale of fraud, imagine how democracy is being undermined across the state. Questions are now being raised about CR Patil’s record victories in the past elections,” Chavda said.

Saturday assured dairy farmers of Gujarat that he would stand with them for resolution of their problems, including lack of remunerative prices for milk and the ruling BJP’s “control” over the sector. On a one-day visit to the state, Gandhi held a meeting with cooperative sector leaders and members of various milk unions and dairies here in the backdrop of recent protests organized by dairy farmers outside Sabar Dairy in Himmatnagar town on milk procurement prices. “Rahul Gandhi assured farmers he will stand with them. He told the dairy farmers that AMUL had started as a movement and they will have to launch a movement to free the dairy sector from the control of one party,” Congress spokesperson Hiren Banker said after the meeting. Dairy farmers, in their representation to the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, said they are facing huge problems in getting remunerative prices for milk, Banker informed. “They told Rahul ji that the BJP is totally controlling the dairy sector cooperatives in Gujarat. They decide the price. The farmers told him they have to do whatever the agents tell them to do. Farmers said only those associated with the BJP get jobs in the dairy industry,” Banker added.

Gandhi asked the farmers to ght and promised to stand with them in their struggle, the Congress spokesperson informed. Earlier in the day, Gandhi addressed a training camp for the Congress’ district unit chiefs as part of eorts to strengthen the party organisation ahead of Gujarat assembly polls slated for 2027.

Gujarat: Mahisagar bridge collapse victims’ kin meet Rahul Gandhi to seek ‘justice'; he assures help

The family members of some of the victims of the Mahisagar river bridge collapse incident, which claimed 20 lives in Gujarat earlier this month, on Saturday met Congress MP Rahul Gandhi here to seek “justice”, and the leader assured to help them. Several vehicles plunged into the Mahisagar river after a segment of the 40-year-old bridge near Gambhira village in Vadodara district collapsed on July 9, killing 20 people.

Gandhi was in Anand district of the state as part of his day-long visit to the BJP-ruled state.

He held a meeting with cooperative sector leaders and members of various milk unions and dairies in Jitodiya town in Anand district in the backdrop of recent protests organised by dairy farmers in Himmatnagar town on milk procurement prices.

The family members of the bridge collapse incident victims came to meet Gandhi in Jitodiya.

State Congress spokesperson Hiren Banker said, “The family members of seven victims of the bridge collapse incident came to meet Rahul Gandhi (at the programme venue), but the police denied entry to them saying they do not have any authorisation. However, when Gandhi learnt about them, he asked the police to allow them.” “The family members told Gandhi that the victims lost their lives due to negligence and corruption of the BJP government in Gujarat. They said the administration should not have allowed traffic on the bridge which was going to collapse,” he said.

“They said they should get justice for the loss of lives of their loved ones,” Banker said.

They pointed out that the government did not even provide proper financial assistance, and urged Gandhi to help them, he said.

Gandhi told them that the Congress would fight to get justice for them, and assured to extend all assistance.
