Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday asked the BJP-led government at the Centre what it was celebrating after three years in power, as all it had to show for this time were “broken promises” and “non- performance”.

Pointing to farmer suicides and unemployment in the country, he said the last three years were a “betrayal” of the mandate the government had received.

“Youth are struggling to find jobs, farmers are committing suicide & soldiers are dying at the border. What exactly is the Govt celebrating?” Gandhi tweeted.

“3 years of broken promises, non performance & betrayal of a mandate,” he said in another tweet.

Ahmed Patel urges Congress cadres to fight ‘Goebbels Propaganda’

In an apparent reference to the ruling BJP at the Centre as well as in Gujarat, senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel today asked the party cadres to use social media as a weapon to fight “Goebbels Propaganda.” The term ‘Goebbels Propaganda’ was coined after the name of German politician Paul Joseph Goebbels who was the Reich Minister of Propaganda of Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945 and was known for his skills in public speaking. While addressing a seminar of party’s IT cell here, Patel, who is the political secretary to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has changed various parameters for determining GDP to hide its failures.

“The social media is not a tool to exploit technology. Some persons use this medium to acquire power and then try to retain it by various marketing tools and spreading lies. Some people are only exploiting social media in a wrong manner,” said Patel. “I urge IT cell workers to use social media in a positive manner to defeat those who are into spreading Goebbels Propaganda. Along with strengthening the party, we should also spread message of harmony and national integration,” said Patel.

Solanki for using 50% poll budget in social media campaigning

Senior Congress leaders on Sunday laid emphasis on the use of social media in the run-up to the Assembly elections later this year. During the party’s Navsarjan Cyber Meet here, GPCC president Bharatsinh Solanki said Congress’s IT Cell of will get all necessary facilities, and also advocated diverting 50 per cent of the party’s election budget towards social media campaigning. Gujarat Congress has been running its election campaign under ‘Navsarjan Gujarat’ tagline.

The meet was organised to provide useful tips and material to Congress workers and office bearers in effectively using social media to increase the party’s reach among public and to allay alleged falsehood being spread by the rival BJP. Apart from Solanki, the meet was attended by senior leaders like Ahmed Patel, Arjun Modhwadia and Jagdish Thakor, besides party MLAs and workers. In his address, Solanki said, “We cannot fight BJP in terms of money. But, we can fight them through guerrilla warfare…” “In elections, Facebook has wider reach than Twitter. So, I say that we should work more to increase our reach on Facebook,” said Solanki, minutes before news of senior Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela unfollowing all 30 Twitter handles came.

Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel today said that Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre refused funds for Sauni irrigation project in Gujarat. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani however said the state wasn’t dependent on the Central funds for this project. Patel tweeted that BJP government in Gujarat should explain reasons for Centre’s decision to deny funds.

“Why has Centre rejected funds for Gujarat’s Sauni project? Isn’t it an injustice to the state or the people (who) were being sold unfeasible dreams?” Patel asked.

Senior Gujarat Congress leader Ahmed Patel asked party workers to defeat the BJP so that justice can be delivered to the country. Speaking at the state executive meeting held at AMC Auditorium in Bodakdev on Wednesday, Patel cleared that Shankersinh Vaghela and Bharatsinh Solanki are not fighting for any post, but do have difference of opinions. Meanwhile, Vaghela once again declared that he is not in race to become Chief Minister and will fight against BJP in upcoming polls. On the other hand, Congress’s Gujarat incharge Ashok Gehlot asked workers to the win elections first and then work towards a CM candidate.

Patel said, “Gujarat’s economic condition has deteriorated over past many years. The number of unemployed youths is steadily rising and farmers’ condition is the worst. Narendra Modi’s long tenure in Gujarat has led to this debacle. It will be an injustice to the country, if we do not win this assembly election. We should not stop till Narendra Modi is forced to return to the state.” He added that that tickets for the election should be issued on merit. Bapu’s take Congress’s state executive was dominated by the Vaghela-Solanki rift. Although, Vaghela once again clarified that he is not in the CM race.

Goal is to defeat BJP, says Ashok Gehlot

Ashok Gehlot, the former chief minister of Rajasthan and recently appointed in-charge of Gujarat Congress, made it clear on Wednesday that the party will go to the polls without naming a chief ministerial candidate.

In his first extended state executive committee meeting, Gehlot emphasized that the real priority of Congress in Gujarat is to defeat BJP in 2017 assembly elections, and the name of the its CM candidate was moot at this point of time.

“There are a lot of rumours about who will be the CM once the party wins. This question is totally irrelevant. Our only goal is to win the 2017 elections and defeat the BJP,” Gehlot said, adding, “Thereafter, only the party high command will decide who will be the CM.”

Gehlot said that Shankersinh Vaghela, the leader of opposition, or Bharatsinh Solanki, the state party president, are not the only claimants for the post, but any other person could also become chief minister.

“Only those who can win will get tickets,” said Gehlot, adding, “The country has a lot of expectations from Gujarat and the state elections will bring a major change to the country.”

Congress to focus on winning elections, not chief ministerial candidate

An “extended party executive” meeting of the Gujarat Congress here on Wednesday decided to leave aside the contentious issue of who will be the chief ministerial face and focus on putting up a united fight to win the State Assembly this year as the top priority. Setting out the agenda clearly before the state leaders and sending a message to the rank and file, AICC general secretary and the party’s Gujarat affairs in-charge Ashok Gehlot asserted at the meeting, “We are not going to dwell into who will be the chief ministerial face of the party.” “Our priority is very clear, and it is to first win the elections and the chief minister will be decided after that,” he stated. Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Shankersinh Vaghela, who had been reportedly positioning himself as the contender for the chief minister, rubbished all allegations that he had walked out of a meeting convened by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi last week. He said, “The allegations are totally baseless. I am not in the race for chief minister and the 2017 elections will be fought under the leadership of Bharatsinh Solanki.” Steering clear of the contentious issue, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Bharatsinh Solanki instead targeted the BJP in the State. He said, “BJP leaders are seeking safer seats for the coming elections and this shows they are going to be defeated. We will be preparing the election manifesto at micro level. All the candidates will be decided at the local level. There will be different manifestos for urban as well as rural areas”.
